This book offers an archive of images depicting disability. It aims to use these images to indicate the public’s attitude toward disabled people. The archive adds to the overwhelming amount of evidence showing the marginalization of disabled people by various social forces. The images are signs that exist in public spaces, which tend to serve a perceived service or information function for disabled and sometimes non-disabled people. I chose this type of representation because signs reflect public attitude toward disabled people. Attitudes portrayed in these signs are seen as common and acceptable, or the public is oblivious to the negative attitude portrayed.
Each sign includes my informal analysis as a disabled person. This is an analysis informed by my education in disability studies classes and my own frustrations with the attitudes represented by the signs. The full text of the book is available here.
